Cold Front Coming
It’s February and starting to look like winter has been kicking back up with temperatures plummeting. We want to remind everyone of some of the inherent dangers of dealing with frigid temperatures.
-First the use of space heaters to warm up rooms is always a threat if used improperly. Make sure they are kept 3 feet from anything combustible. They should be UL approved with tip-over protection to power off if they are knocked over. Be careful not to overload electrical circuits by plugging in two in one outlet. Most rooms have 15 amp circuits that can easily overload with these appliances. Fuel burning kerosene heaters are not allowed for residential use in the Town of Newburgh. If using in garages, make sure you let them cool off and refuel outside only.
-Second oil fired furnaces and woodstoves should be maintained annually. Buildup of soot may cause breakdown of oil furnaces and possible fires. Creosote in chimneys can buildup and cause fires or dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide in your home. Always make sure your smoke and CO detectors are up to date and functioning.
-Last but not least, the use of portable generators during extended power outages should be monitored closely. Exhaust must be directed away from the home and outdoors only. Close any windows that may be near fumes. Let them cool down before attempting to refuel any gasoline powered generators. Now is a good time to check sump pumps as well. When spring comes with melting snow and above average water tables, it’s better to be prepared. Thanks for thinking fire safety. We all need to do our part to be safe!
