Loss of Centenarian Don Stillwaggon
It is with regret we announce the passing of our 80 year member Donald K Stillwaggon. You may recall we celebrated Don’s 100th Birthday with a ride around the Fire District in our 1949 Mack Pumper last year. Don was a well respected and honored member of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department. White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral Directors are handled his arrangements for Friday, March 11th, 2022 at the Leptondale Bible Church on Chapel Rd and Rt 300 in the Town of Newburgh.
Don joined the Department when he was 20 years old. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a navigator. When he came home he continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves and settled back in Cronomer Valley as the owner operator of Stillwaggon Printery with his wife Jeanette. Through the years he served as a firematic officer up to Assistant Chief and served as a Treasurer for the Department on the social side. When he no longer served on the front lines firefighting, he served as fire police and became a top 12 responder. Don would often lead us in prayer at our meetings and events. He was a devoted Christian and could often be seen going to the Leptondale Bible church for worship and events. Don was also part of the Stillwaggon Family legacy that shaped the history of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department with his brothers Carl and Elbert, and his nephew Stuart.
Don was laid to rest in his final resting place at the Goshen Veterans Cemetery on Thursday, March 31st,2022 with a small service and military honors.
May we honor Donald’s life and strive to be the type of person he was in our daily lives. Thank you for your service Don; we will take it from here.
