Unusual Spill Encountered
Cronomer Valley Fire Department gets all types of fires, motor vehicle accidents, and hazardous situations within the 3 mile stretch of I-87 that falls within the Districts territory. On Tuesday, May 10th, 2022, around 12:30pm the Department was called to a cargo truck leaking olive oil at mile marker 64.8 northbound. A 20′ intermodal trailer operated by ERL Intermodal Corp. of Utica was carrying a 2000 gallon bladder filled with olive oil that developed a leak. Approximately 75 gallons had already spilled onto the shoulder of the road when crews arrived. The oil is considered non-toxic and biodegradable with a high ignition temperature. Fire department personnel worked with NY State Police, Winona Lake FD, Plattekill FD, NYS Thruway Authority and NYS DEC to contain the spill while arrangements to offload the oil to another truck could be made. Crews set up a containment site at the Plattekill Rest Area with a sand berm to collect the runoff. Crews were back in service at approximately 2pm.
